How to store a coin collection
Good storage keeps coins in the condition they were in when you got them. Most damage to collections — spots, green residue, scratches — comes from handling and storage, not from age.
Handle coins correctly
- Hold coins by the edge between thumb and forefinger, over a soft towel or pad.
- Wear soft cotton or nitrile gloves; skin oils are corrosive and fingerprints are hard to remove.
- Do not talk directly over coins — tiny droplets of saliva can leave spots.
Choose the right holders
- Original mint packaging for modern sets and commemoratives (see commemorative coins).
- 2×2 cardboard or plastic holders for single coins, with notes written on the holder.
- Folders and albums for series by date and mint mark (see US coin series).
- Hard plastic capsules for higher-value coins. Grading services use sealed holders (“slabs”).
- Tubes for rolls of common coins or bullion.
Avoid PVC and acid
Use acid-free cardboard and plastics labelled PVC-free. Soft PVC flips break down over time and can coat coins with a sticky green residue that damages the surface. Avoid rubber bands, ordinary envelopes and paper that may contain sulfur, which tones silver.
Control the environment
- Keep coins cool and dry; sudden changes in temperature and humidity cause spots and discoloration.
- Avoid attics, basements, bathrooms and car glove boxes.
- A silica gel pack in a closed box helps in humid climates; replace or dry it regularly.
Keep records and keep them safe
- Save certificates and information cards that came with coins.
- Keep an inventory with photos (see how to photograph coins). The MintPriced app lets you export your scan history as CSV and your collection as JSON.
- For valuable collections, consider a bank safe-deposit box and check that your insurance covers full replacement cost.
